Hello everyone! i know it has been a while since i have updated the blog but things have been a little....busy, or should i say different, lately.
I am certain most my faithful followers are aware of the unfortunate career change forced upon me at the end of August - but i will update you all anyway.
On the three year anniversary of my mom's death (yes,i have to reference that to add DRAMA to my story) - my employer of three years laid me off. At 7.5 months pregnant! can you believe it? So where does that leave me? I am now a kept woman! a lady that lunches, if you will. TOTALLY kidding - of course. I am a now eight month pregnant woman who has to log on to unemployment every week and apply for three jobs. Are you kidding me? how did i end up here? i am not real sure. Shaw (said employer) is definitely going through some rough times and i knew it was a possibility that i not make it through the rough times. I wasn't torn apart about being let go - i actually looked at it as a blessing, with the help of my husband and friends perspectives. Since my last day, i have been busy!
It just so happened that Gates' school was closed for Labor day vacation for most of my first week unemployed. I got to spend some extra time with him while also getting some things done around the house (mostly making lists of things i want to get done around the house). Then, as my luck would have it, my poor little pumpkin got SICK on my second week unemployed. So i was home taking care of a vomiting little boy. it wasn't fun but i felt blessed that Cam didn't have to miss work and that i was able to be home with him, without worry about missing things at work. So this is my third week of unemployment and i have gotten SO much done! Should i bore you with the details? Enjoy my bulleted list below...
- I took my boots in to be cleaned for the fall
- returned some of Gates' BIRTHDAY gifts that were duplicates. yes, his birthday was in June. See what i mean? i have been putting off so much stuff and now is the time to do it.
- cleaned out closets
- pulled stuff together for a garage sale (it will be one hell of a garage sale)
- helped to get my husband more organized (this is a task)
- rested
- caught up on my trashy reality tv
- spent some time with sweet baby Kate Crossley who is over three weeks old now.
- made a trip to Austin to see my aunt, uncle, and cousins
- had the exterminator out to the house and Stanley Steamer (after the vomiting little boy, this was necessary).
- lots of trips to the store
- help in dinner preparations (as much as a kitchen challenged person can help)
and the list could go on and on.
I feel so productive. I really do. I have moved stuff around in my house - finding the perfect place for things that have never really had a place at all. i am staying busy, there is no doubt.
As far as my pregnancy goes - i am feeling HUGE. i can't believe i don't remember this part of my pregnancy with Gates. i hate night time and trying to fall asleep because I am SO uncomfortable. i have the worst indigestion - i can't seem to eat enough tums. i also cant' seem to eat enough chocolate.
and the most scary part of the pregnancy is that for a brief period in time, i was UNINSURED due to the lay-off. That was SCARY. i just knew i was going to have this baby early and we were going to rack up some serious medical debt (that's a way to think positive, right?) but instead, all is well and i am insured again! My husband's company kicked some serious butt in getting me insured quickly and stress level has gone down expotenitally.
Gates is great now. all better and loving going to school every day (vs just the part time program he was on). i really think he enjoys the routine and activity and fun that comes with attending school 5 days a week. I do notice he is EXHAUSTED at the end of the day but that just means he has had a full day of learning and socializing.
I could type forever because (i have nothing else to do) i have so much to say but i guess i will save it for another post.
have a great Wednesday (is today Wednesday? i lose track now. :))

Three years ago....
While most people keep a blog to allow family and friends to follow their lives and stay in touch – I realized that I keep one as more of a journal for myself. I love that I have loyal readers (all three of you) but I also really love going back and reading my entries and knowing I will be able to do that for years to come.
Disclaimer - this particular entry will be a little more heavy than past entries.
My life was turned upside down three years ago tomorrow (Aug 26). I don’t think I will ever forget the series of events and the way things unfolded – and I am not sure that I want to. I went to work, just as I would any normal Tuesday. I remember taking one of those silly quiz “get to know me better” email forward things and one of the questions was “what do you fear most in life” and my response was “death. Losing a loved one” – I had NO idea I was about to look that fear straight in the eye. That evening, I had dinner with a friend and went home. I remember pulling out of the parking lot of the restaurant and for a second I thought about calling my mom but then decided not to; I was too tired. I fell asleep that night with my phone by my bed – nothing unusual there. Living alone, I always wanted my phone nearby in case of an emergency. Besides, it was also my alarm clock. I remember my phone ringing and waking me a couple of different times but I just silenced the ringer and went back to sleep. Around 330, my phone rang again and I woke and looked to see my sister calling me. I thought this was odd because it was in the middle of the night. I answered the phone and
she said “Katy?”
I replied “Yes, what’s wrong?”
Trish “Moms not with us anymore.”
Katy “What? What do you mean?”
Trish “moms not with us anymore.”
I will NEVER, for as long as I live, forget those words and how they made me feel. It was lonely. And so FINAL. I don’t know how else to explain it but if you have experienced a close personal loss then you know what I am talking about . the finality of losing someone so unexpectedly is almost too much to bear.
And I remember thinking about my poor sister – who, by the time she finally reached me at 3:30 in the morning, had heard the news from my father and gotten in her car and driven to Houston. She was exiting the freeway to come to my house when I answered the phone. She had to drive the entire drive from Austin to Houston knowing that she had to tell her baby sister that our mom had died. What a terrible feeling.
I hung up from talking to her and paced the house – feeling the closest to an out of body experience as I have ever felt. And then I went outside and waited to see my sister’s headlights coming down my dark and lonely street – in the middle of the night. from my driveway I called my dear friend, Tracy and woke her up. she wanted to come over but I assured her I was fine. I remember wanting to call some other friends, too but I didn’t want to wake anyone….as if this wasn’t urgent or something. and I remember calling sweet Cameron – who at the time was merely my boyfriend of THREE weeks. I left him a message telling him my mom had died. What a heavy message that was to receive. And then I saw my sister’s headlights and I stood up, waiting to hug her. Everything after this is kinda a blur. I remember emailing my boss to tell her that I would not be into work (and I didn’t return for 8 days following). I remember my sister and I driving from my house to my parents house to see my dad and find out what happened. My dad was sitting in the dark….staring at the wall. And the spot at the kitchen table where my mom had died was still ‘there’. To go into more detail at this point would be too painful for my little heart to bear. But these are my memories.
The minutes, hours, days, and weeks to follow were filled with so much emotion. I was completely beside myself at what my friends did for me in the wake of my mother’s passing. To this day, it makes me cry. Within hours of the news being passed around to different people, I had a house full of love and support. my girlfriends went to the grocery store to get food in my house, they got my wireless internet up and running, they dug through my belongings and pulled out pictures of my mom and framed them throughout my house. They took care of my dogs, they went shopping for a dress for me to wear to the funeral. They organized dinner schedules, they purchased flowers, they took phone calls, and passed on the devastating news to the people I couldn’t talk to. They took control when I felt I had lost it all. And it was then that I realized what true friendships were about. Within hours of news spreading, both my sister and I had friends arriving in town from all over the US. So in a time of such tragedy – to feel so blessed was overwhelming and comforting.
I could type forever about the way the rest of the days unfolded and the things I remember – but this would turn into a book instead of a blog.
To say that my mother & I were very close would be an understatement. We had a unique relationship –I didn’t depend on her in the ways some of friends do with their moms but I depended on her to BE THERE. To always answer the phone; to listen to me vent; to support me; to cheer me on; to bridge the relationship between me & my father; to always understand me. She was not only my mother, she was the keeper of all of my memories, she was Santa Claus, and the birthday fairy, she made every holiday and achievement special. She was thoughtful and had a heart the size of Texas. She was funny – and mysterious. And bless her heart, I think she battled a lot of things internally without ever seeking help. She was strong in so many ways and weak in others. The bottom line – she was my mom. that can’t ever be replaced. I will never be able to get a new mom. She was it. I don’t care what anyone says – NO ONE loves you like your mom! no one. And being a mom now, that is even more evident.
She passed in August and I found out I was pregnant in November. I got married the following March. My life has been one GIANT blessing after another since I lost my mom. Do you know how difficult that is for me to type? But I recognize that I would have never let myself love or be loved in the ways I have with cameron if my she were still alive. She was an albatross in a lot of ways. And that is difficult to type, as well. but I worried about her nonstop. I wanted to give her the world, fix all of her problems – even the ones she wouldn’t admit to. I wanted to make it all better – to the point of being unhealthy. I will never forget meeting a dear friend for drinks about a week after my mom died. This friend was out of town for the funeral and so she had not seen me and the first thing she said to me is, “you seem lighter”. I will never forget that. because I did feel lighter. Strange the way things work.
My mom wouldn’t know my life now. I am so different. I am more simple. I am happy. I am not conflicted. I am a motherless daughter, too – that part makes me sad.

We Have a Name!
Hooray! Cameron & I have finally decided on a name for our little nugget. I have had many friends ask me to please hurry up with a name already so they can head on to the monogram shops and get some things personalized for sweet baby Franz. And while Cam appreciates the sweet gesture behind personalized gifts, this was not reason enough for him to hurry up and make a decision. We have had many discussions about names - none of which ended with a final decision ... and i was losing my mind! i wanted so badly to be able to start calling our sweet baby by name, especially to Gates. but last week i asked Cameron if we could please have a serious talk about names and possibly decide on one - and he said "OK". it was that easy. So when we started really talking about the different names we had been considering, we realized that we both loved the same one the most.
So - drumroll please......
..........................................................................................................................................................................
Gray Malloy Franz
(his full name will be Grayson but we will call him Gray always). So why make his full name Grayson, you ask. We have no answer.
Malloy is Cameron's grandfather's middle name.
Hope you love it as much as we do!

Weekend Recap
We had a very busy & fun-filled weekend!! My sister came in town on Friday evening and spent the weekend with us. I love having her here but hate saying goodbye to her at the end of the weekend even more. Her and Gates share a very special relationship. He loves her. it warms my heart to see how comfortable he is with her and how sweet she is with him. There is no doubt they are buddies.
We celebrated a big occasion on Saturday at our house. We invited all our family over to cheers to my magnificent Mimi who turned 91 years old last week!!! She is the glue that holds our family together – and I love that she is still so with it and still so much a force to be reckoned with in our family.
Here are some pictures from the big birthday bash.
Saturday night we got to celebrate another fun birthday. My dear friend Melissa’s husband, Ryan, is now the big 30! It was fun to have a night out with my hubby, spent with friends. We had a great time and wish for Ryan a very special year filled with lots of love!
And the fun didn’t stop there. I got to attend a fun brunch with family at Ouisie’s Table on Sunday morning to celebrate my sister-in-law’s birthday. It was so nice to get together with some of the ladies in our family for some genuine girl talk and yummy food.
What a great weekend spent with people that I really really love. The next couple of weeks are going to be bittersweet (I will talk more about that later) so it was fun to have a weekend that kept me busy, laughing, and counting my blessings!

A trip down memory lane….
August is a month of memories for me – some good and some bad. Today marks the 3 year anniversary of one of my favorite memories! Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we?
I met Cameron in January of 2008 but it wasn’t until a fishing trip with my father that I really started to notice him as something serious! My dad was always very involved in a fishing tournament in Port O’Connor called POCIFT. I had gone many times in the past – once with just my dad, once with my entire family, and my first time was just me, mom, and dad. It was ALWAYS a good time. 2008 POCIFT - My mom had decided to not attend this particular year but I knew I wanted to still go, i just needed to find someone else to accompany me and be the buffer between me & pops. My dad is my dad – I love him dearly, but to say we are the closest of fathers and daughters would not be accurate. POCIFT was always so much fun, so I knew that anyone I invited would have a good time, assuming they liked to fish and were fairly low maintenance. Cameron immediately came to mind. He was fun (we had only hung out two times prior to this event), liked to fish, and I knew he was about as laid back as they come.
So randomly I emailed him and asked if he had plans that particular weekend. Surprisingly enough, he was available and interested in going! I was so excited to have someone accompany me on this trip but had no idea how life-changing it would be, literally. Cam picked me up that Friday (three years ago TODAY) and we hit the road towards PoC. And from the minute I got in his car, I had butterflies in my stomach. I enjoyed his company so much more than I had anticipated. We talked and laughed and had so much fun the entire weekend. I will never forget calling my mom to just say hello and her hearing it in my voice that something was different. And my sister, too! I called my sister to ask her something and she remembers (and will comment to this day) that something was special about that phone call – she could just tell that her little sister was smitten. By the end of the weekend, I knew I didn’t want to be away from Cameron. I was sad when he dropped me off at home that Sunday and I couldn’t wait to see him again.
I remember describing the weekend to family and friends as effortless, genuine, relaxing, fun. looking back now, I still get butterflies. It amazes me how the universe shifts and stars align and there you are – face to face with the person you know, deep in your soul, you are supposed to be with. There was never a doubt after that. I just knew. And that was the only way I could explain it to anyone.
I am so happy my dad was around that weekend – to see the beginning of us. I am not sure if he saw it as much as we were feeling it, but he definitely got to know Cameron and respect him. Cam never got to meet my mom. She died three weeks later. But it gives me so much joy to know that she knew I had met him and that he made me happy. I think she just knew, too. We call it mom’s intuition.
**a little more history for those interested… Cam and I met on a blind date in January of 2008. My aunt set us up – she is another one that just knew. Two weeks before she died, my mom sent my aunt a note saying THANK YOU for introducing Katy and Cameron. Crazy, right? we were only a few weeks in the relationship and even though I knew in my heart & soul that I wanted to marry him – I wasn’t about to admit that anyone else (or even myself, for that matter). My mom just knew there was something special about him.
I consider myself the luckiest woman in the world. I really do. I still find myself thinking about how things unfolded – the series of events that led me to him. Magic. I can’t get enough of him.

A little bit of bragging!
My mom loved telling my sister & I “GOOD JOB!” and she loved bragging about us. She would talk to anyone that would listen. The delivery man, the checker at the grocery store, etc. She just wanted the world to know how amazing she thought we were. I think I inherited that from her – I enjoy celebrating other people. Maybe it is just one more way I can carry my mom’s legacy with me, by celebrating other people. So this blog is dedicated to my momma but will celebrate my sister!
She comes so easy for me to brag about. She is truly genius. There is so much I could say but I will try to sum it all up into her latest accomplishment. (Who am I kidding, I won’t be able to do that.)
I am a disaster in the kitchen. The spice aisle at the grocery store gives me anxiety. It is a true talent and a science to be able to put a bunch of flavors together and make something that tastes good. But she does it, every single day. With passion. And it amazes me. I stayed with her recently when I was in town for my nana’s funeral and to just see her way of life was so impressive to me. and I know it drives her crazy that I am impressed by the silly things she considers normal, but I can’t help it. anyway – she made me the most delicious breakfast and I don’t even really like breakfast. And the way she did it was so chef-like (this sounds like a joke, but I am being serious when I say it. Melissa, she is like Adam Sandler’s sandwich in Spanglish – are you with me on this?). Like this is in her blood, y’all. I may change careers 30 times in my life but she will ALWAYS be a chef at heart. How are we so different in that aspect? And while I was in Austin, she was in the process of finishing up the final touches on her new menu at work. WHAT?! I mean, that alone is a daunting task. She had to come up with an entire new menu (do you know how many spices that involves?) – and crunch numbers for it to make sure it was in their budget. And then how on earth do you know how much food to buy for that new menu. It is seriously all way too overwhelming to me. But, she is a master of her trade. So after I returned back to Houston, her menu launched. And the Austin Chronicle came out to photograph some of her menu items and sample them. well, this is the result of that visit with the Chronicle. Click here.
I mean, what? The best fried chicken in Austin? That’s huge, right? and it’s not like all the reviews were nice and they were just being polite. The writer straight up called Mrs. P’s Electric Cook’s chicken bloody. This is the same publication (but different writer) that claimed Trish served the best diner food in all the universe. read that review here.
She is a local celebrity. And if I were to win even half a lottery, my first investment would be on her. She makes me proud every single day of my life. I get excited for Gates to be around her because I can already tell he senses her coolness. She will be able to teach him so much. She is way cooler than I could ever be. And I will tell you that she is the NUMBER 1 reason I wanted to have another baby. I wanted Gates to feel that bond that siblings share. I wanted him to know that he would NEVER be alone. There is something to be said about my relationship with my sister. We may be very different in obvious ways but we are SO much alike in most ways. I see so much of my mom and dad in her – she is like the best mixture of both of them. she has my dad’s smarts with my mom’s heart. And everyone loves being around her, everyone. How lucky am I that I get to have a sister that is THIS cool? I just can’t seem to get enough of her, my little pistachio.
Groundhog’s Day
Last week – ALL week – I thought I was in my 26th week of this pregnancy. Then, I looked at my calendar and realized I was only on my 25th week. Man o man – do you know what a blow that is? it is like a week lost. And this week is like Groundhog’s Day. The baby is (just now) still an eggplant. The baby is (just now) still getting eyelids. I mean, I know I should be grateful to make it to 26 weeks at all, but TWO weeks in a row. Geez.
But I will say that time has started to speed up. Especially as I realize the number of things I still want to do before this baby comes. Top on that list – name the baby. My husband doesn’t seem to find that as important as I do. I want him to have a name NOW. I think our problem is that Gates is such a great name. There is nothing we would change about it. It is a family name. It is unique. It is strong. And it suites him. We don’t have anything like that for baby #2. Sure, there are other great family names but they aren’t as unique. And, I know you will agree, that we can’t have a Gates and then have a John. It just doesn’t work that way. So who knows what we will end up naming him.
That’s all I got for now. I promise to write more this week. Oh, and post pictures from the circus. and the luau Gates had at school last week. and his hair cut. gosh, i better get to work posting some pictures!

Again, I am sorry for the lack of blogging but things have been busy! Cam got back from Costa Rica and that following Monday, his sweet Grandmom had a severe stroke that ended up taking her life 6 days later. He was by her bedside for the better part of those 6 days. We all got the opportunity to say our goodbyes, even Gates in his own way. It has been a sad couple of weeks for our family. Losing someone is never easy, expected or unexpected. And to see my hubby and his family go through this made me even more sad. But I rejoice in the fact that she is heaven with her parents and brother, whom she lost a couple of years ago. And I must say that I like the way the family comes together in time of need. We will get through it all together.
And as if losing our grandmothers were not enough – our family fish (yes, I had a fish) kicked the bucket last week. Helen (the nanny and practically a part of our family, for better or worse) gave Gates this fish many months ago…poor little fella.
So that’s where we have been – mentally. Dealing with loss and spending time with family.
The rest of this blog will kinda be all over the place.
This past weekend we really made progress on Gates’s big boy room – we are ALMOST there. We still need to hang stuff on the walls, find him a cute headboard, and then move all his stuff in there. But it will happen in plenty of time for him to get used to that room before baby comes and takes over his other room. I also insisted Cam pull out all of Gates’ newborn clothes from storage so I could either feel comfortable in the amount of stuff we have for baby #2 or panic and start shopping like crazy to prepare. I am pleased to report that we have a lot of great things that will work for the baby. I got a little teary eyed pulling out these tiny preemie outfits that Cam had to rush out and buy when our little nugget, Gates, was brought home from the hospital at 5.5 lbs. Holding the little clothes up, I would never believe that anything could fit into them. Crazy how time flies. And everyone warned me of it, but it still surprises me. you can never really prepare for it, but I think this blog will help with baby #2 – so I can go back and read all the milestones, etc. wish I had started this sooner. Oh well.
Gates has been the sweetest little boy in all of Texas. I swear, the kid has the purest heart and what more can a parent ask for? I told Cameron I am so happy he will be the big brother because I think he will be so sweet to his little brother (after he adjusts to the total life change). Gates hugs ALL the time. and when he does something he knows he shouldn’t do – he immediately feels bad about it, like he knows I am disappointed in him. I could not love him anymore. We are so blessed.
Let’s see…what else? Oh, I took Gates to the circus last weekend with two of my very best friends and their children. It was so much fun to see Gates so mesmerized by everything that was going on (for the first 30 minutes, anyway). He loved the elephants, the clowns, the cotton candy, the lemonade, the fun day, and especially the crazy circus toy (that was 22 dollars!!!!) that we got him on the way out the door. It was a sweet afternoon, that I will remember for a long time. Pictures to follow. As if the circus wasn’t enough excitement for the day, after a nap we headed out to Katy to visit another best friend and her kiddos. Gates LOVES hanging with Peyton & Beau. I really think he has formed a little crush on Peyton – he totally listens to her and lets her help him with all kinds of stuff. It is sweet to watch. The circus fun combined with time with Kim and her kids made for a perfect day.
That’s about it…oh, except I had a special visit in my dream last night. My mom came to tell me hello. I don’t think I saw her, but she was there – cheering me up (from what, I don’t really know – it was a strange dream). I wish she was in my dreams every night but then I guess they wouldn’t be as special, right? We are coming up on the 3 year anniversary of her death – I REALLY can’t believe that. But more on that later.
Have a great day!

No Rest for the Weary
As soon as Cam got home, I was ready to GO. To go where, I wasn’t sure but I was ready for it. I had been going a little crazy without him so I wanted to make up for lost time. This makes total sense, right? Well, from his perspective, he was exhausted. He was worn out from surfing every day (I know, it’s difficult to find sympathy) and actually got a bit of food poisoning on the last night of his trip – so he wasn’t in peak condition. But that didn’t stop him – bless his heart. For whatever silly reason, my taste buds were craving Bennihana. I mean, some of you are probably thinking “that place is still open?”. Yes, it is.
**side story here. we went to bennihana every. single. year on our birthdays. Nana (same nana from previous post) and Pop would take us and it was such a treat. We loved the food, the company, the ice cream, the singing, the entertainment, the star treatment, etc. It was always a night to remember. Well, one year my mom told me there would be a special guest joining us for our birthday dinner at bennihana. And y’all, I was totally convinced it was Patrick Swayze (rip). I am laughing as I type this. But I was a huge fan (this was around the time of dirty dancing) and my mom knew this. I thought Nana and Pop had pulled some serious strings (see what I mean about them making us feel special, I believed they got me a celebrity to join us for dinner) and ole Patrick would be there to help me celebrate. To my disappointment, it was my aunt (my mom’s sister who I mentioned in previous post, as well) and uncle and four cousins. I love them dearly, too – and still get really excited to see them but when I am expecting Patrick Swayze – really only Patrick Swayze will do.
Anyway- so back to Franz Family night at Bennihana. It was good but not like I remember. Gates was a little cranky and so keeping him in his seat was a challenge (even with our Japanese chef, Juan, entertaining us with his volcano made out of onion and choo-choo train made out of zucchini). But all in all, I was just so pleased to have a family dinner at an old family favorite restaurant. I was so happy that even though Cam was exhausted and not feeling 100%, he agreed to take us.
Sunday we spent most of the day pulling together Gates’ big boy room. We aren’t done yet but we got his bed put together (still need headboard), curtains hung, rug laid down, etc. It is really starting to come together and it looks like a big boy’s room. tear.
We made time for a little fun for Gates, too. Cam’s cousin, Bobby, dropped off some hand-me-down toys for Gates and in that was an electronic Power Wheels Harley. So we replaced the battery, gave it a little cleaning, and she was good as new. Check out Gates on his new ride. He is clearly too young for something so cool, but he loved riding it and I know it will be hours of entertainment in the years to come.

Where I've Been....
This blog has been seriously neglected – I apologize for that. but for my two faithful readers, you know I have had a busy couple of weeks.
I had been dreading July 1 for a long time. Cam was leaving for his annual surfing trip, leaving Gates & I to really spend some quality time together (!!!). for those of you with multiple kids, I know you don’t feel much sympathy, but for me – it was a lot to swallow to think of 8 days with a 2 year old without Cam’s help.
But I had no idea that July 1 would be so difficult for me for an entirely different reason – my sweet Nana went to be with the Lord that morning. This is my mom’s mom – my biggest cheerleader and Gates’s biggest fan. She had been ill for so many years – dating back to before my mom died. She always bounced back. She was like a cat with nine lives – so she almost became invincible in my eyes. But this time, it was different. She was so sick and in a lot of pain. Diagnosing her was a challenge; once diagnosed – ‘fixing’ her was a bigger challenge. One problem was fixed and another would surface. This was no way to live. My aunt, my mom’s sister, is truly an amazing woman. She has the biggest heart of nearly anyone I have met. She has loved my sister & I as her own since my mom’s passing (thank God for that) and is a nurturer, no doubt. Her and her husband moved from California to Austin to take care of nana 11 years ago and they have been by her side since. My aunt was by Nana’s side when she took her last breaths on July 1, too. What a painful and precious moment.
So when I heard the news, I was devastated. Cam had not yet left for the airport and was wanting to cancel his trip – I told him to please go and to have fun. I knew there was nothing he could do for me, if he stayed. And although I am so glad he went, I realized shortly after he left what a source of strength and comfort that man is to me. I was lost without him during this time. I was grieving alone (all my mom’s family was in Austin & my dad was in Italy) and it was rough. My in-laws proved to be family, in every sense of the word. They helped with Gates, Cam’s mom was there for me to talk to, and I just knew they were the support I needed during this time.
So – without going into further detail – I drove to Austin for the viewing and funeral on July 4 -5. I stayed with my sister and enjoyed every second of that – she always makes me feel comfortable. Which is the exact reason I wanted a sibling for Gates. There is something SO magical about my sister & I’s relationship. We just get each other. I don’t know how else to explain it. The viewing was difficult, nana didn’t look like herself at all and it really hit me she was gone when I saw her laying there. Death is never easy. The funeral was beautiful. I had a chance to say a few things that I wanted to say – and although it might not have been as eloquent as I would have liked – it summed up how I feel about my nana. One of the hardest parts for me was knowing that the sweet precious peanut in my belly will never get to meet nana. The same nana who insisted I wait to make sure she get to Houston in time, when I was in labor with Gates.
Cam came home on July 9 and I have never been so excited in all my life. Gates and I met him inside the airport – at the international terminal arrivals gate. Seeing all the families reunite after being apart was enough to make me all weepy – I am telling you, I am way too emotional right now. but as soon as I saw Cam and grabbed Gates’ hand to run and greet him – my eyes filled with tears. And I will never, ever – for as long as I live, forget Gates’ sweet voice yelling “dada!!!” and running up to him and hugging him. it still makes me weepy now.
So basically – this week reminded me the importance of family and the strength we find in the places we sometimes we forget about (or take for granted). It made it so painfully obvious that Cameron is so deeply engrained in who I am, that I feel lost without him. and it was so evident to me that our growing little family is solid as a rock.

Weekend Recap!
Weekend Recap!
Friday was Gates’s 2 year check up and we were so happy to hear from the doc how well he is doing! In December, Gates was only in the 15th percentile for his weight and at this checkup he measured in the 57th percentile! He is a growing boy, no doubt. And as you know, because I have been concerned and have vocalized it to everybody, Gates has been a little behind in the talking department. But Dr P said not to worry! He is progressing now and that is all that matters. I think I tend to be a little hard on my little guy. I don’t give him enough credit. The doctor said that in about two months we will have a hard time shutting him up. I welcome it!
After the appointment we took advantage of being out & about on a weekday, as a family. we made a visit to Cam’s grandparents at their new digs (they recently moved to an assisted living place that is just gorgeous). Gates was so well behaved and sweet, you can tell he is really growing out of the shy phase and into a more “I know Im adorable” phase. In all of his adorableness, he managed to dial 911 from their phone. I was scared that an ambulance would be dispatch immediately considering where the call was placed from, but 911 called back and I politely explained to them that my adorable 2 year old was playing with the phone and had accidentally dialed them. I am not sure they found it as amusing. I promised to keep the phone away from him.

After that visit we still weren’t ready to go home but we didn’t know where to go. Gates really had been So sweet all day so we wanted to do something fun for him but it is SO hot outside. So we decided to go somewhere that we will likely never go again; Chuck E Cheese. There are really no words. We felt like we needed a shower as soon as we entered into that place. It was germy and gross and smelly and the food I ordered (even if I am a chronically bad orderer) was hardly edible. But we didn’t let that spoil Gates’ good time – he rode all the little rides at least twice and he tried to play some of the games, even if he was too small. And once the tokens ran out, we promptly left.
Whew! What a Friday!
Saturday was just as exciting, y’all. I have been in real nesting mode for weeks now. This is annoying to everyone around, including myself. I don’t like feeling this way. I have lists EVERYWHERE of things I want to do, areas I want to organize, etc. So my most recent project was to turn this empty space in our house into an official playroom. Previously, this space, which is supposed to be a formal living room, was filled with toys anyway. So Saturday, we woke up and headed to IKEA. Man, that place is frightening. there are no windows, you never know where you are, everything looks alike. At one point, I thought I lost Cameron and I really would have had a panic attack. But we managed to get in and out in two hours with everything we needed to turn this space in our house into an official playroom. And I LOVE It. I will post pics later. The thing about IKEA is that everything comes in a box, needing to be assembled. Even the couch we bought – how is that even possible? But it’s true.
Needless to say, Cameron was a busy man the rest of the day. I am one lucky lady to be married to him!
Sunday we visited Cam’s mom (his dad wasn’t home) for a little while and then took Gates swimming at Cam’s granny’s house. I think everyone loved that – she loved getting to see Gates, Gates loved getting in the water, and Cam and I loved that this would make for a solid afternoon nap. Which it did. And then Grandad (Cam’s dad) wanted to take Gates swimming in the afternoon – so he came and picked him up and they had a fun afternoon at the club. Gates ate icecream, popcicles, chicken tenders, fruit, etc. I know there are few things Gates (and Grandad) enjoy as much as their afternoons together. Sweet. Sweet.

And while Gates was away – Cam and I continued to be so productive. I am proud of how much we accomplished all weekend. We cleaned up the backyard some (it was beginning to look like an abandoned house from the back), I cut Cam’s hair (which has become a regular thing), and we got some things organized in the house.
It was a great weekend! We are finding ways to stay busy during this brutal heat. I just hope I can handle another full 3 months of this. Not to mention, I get bigger every single day. Ah, the joys of pregnancy. ;)

Ah, the joys of pregnancy. ;)

What a mess!
When I picked up Gates yesterday from school, i wanted to take him for a little treat so we headed to Mam's House of Ice, a snow cone shack in the heights that was recommended to me by a friend.
it was the most delicious snow cone i have ever had. The ice is so fine that it doesn't even feel like you are eating a snow cone. And the flavors to choose from are too many to list (and quite overwhelming); for example, you could try the creole cheesecake. I went with Tigersblood (by recommendation from said friend) and got Gates the sugar free strawberry (he doesn't know the difference).
This was the end result! Needless to say, we had a good time!

Random - Meant to post last week, but never did. Written on June 15.
I had my anatomy scan yesterday morning and was so relieved to hear that everything looked great with Baby Boy Franz. The ultrasound tech was really generous with her time (and with the pictures) and is clearly passionate about her job because I was in there for quite some time. She kept telling me “looks beautiful!” or “oh, that’s just beautiful”. Most of the time I couldn’t even tell what we were looking at…I just agreed. Cam made it in time for the end of the ultrasound (which felt like just the beginning because she was so DETAILED) – and we both enjoyed seeing our little boy moving all around and hearing his healthy heartbeat. And I know Cameron was happy to hear that he was, still indeed, a BOY!
Yesterday afternoon I had two girlfriends (Tracy & Sarah) over for a play date, of sorts. I never get to see Sarah and had never met her son – so it was so much fun to have time to catch up and chat. And Sarah is glowing and looking adorable as she enters her third trimester. They chose to not find out the sex but I am convinced she is having a girl. She is such a good mommy and I love hearing all her advice from raising Keegan (who is now 4). And, of course Tracy & Emmie are always a joy to be around. Emmie is adorable. I think I saw a love connection between Emmie & Gates – so we shall see what the coming years bring us. ;) Sarah and I were trying to get Tracy on the pregnant train but I think it will take a little more than just a persuasive talk from us to prepare her for another one.
Speaking of preggers – I have SO many friends that are pregnant right now. It makes it that much more of an enjoyable experience for me. I can call up any number of girls and ask for advice on certain things. And we can talk about our fears of adding another one to the mix, etc. and it is fun to know that all of our little nuggets will get to grow up together! I have so much to look forward to.

Times are Changing...
Happy (belated) Fathers Day to all the Fathers out there and especially to my dad, my father-in-law, and my hubs! We invited everyone over to our house for a Father’s Day lunch Sunday, and it was so nice to have a low key gathering with our families. I loved having my father there, with Cam’s parents, and even Colby’s (Lisa’s husband) parents – who are definitely family, as well! Gates always loves having visitors because he loves to show off all of his toys and get extra attention from the guests – and he is almost always on his best behavior. But let me tell you about the morning leading up to our lunch. ….
Holy Terrible Twos – you are not welcome in the Franz household!!
Gates woke up cranky (and this rarely happens). Let me start by saying that Cameron and I often brag about what an EASY baby Gates was and what an easy toddler he has been. All transitions have been so EASY with him. He slept in his crib from 4 weeks on, slept through the night early, transitioned from bottle to cup without a problem, from baby food to real food, etc. I mean the kid has been EASY! Well Sunday morning, all that went out the window. He was a nightmare. Nothing we did was right. nothing made him happy. I would have sworn he was sick (or possessed) but Cameron just kept saying “nope, this is a tantrum and these are the terrible twos.” I shuttered to think about it. You mean to tell me there is no real cure for this? This is just how it is going to be for a while? Can we ship him off somewhere until he is over it? Y’all, I don’t know if I can handle this! I will be sure to keep you posted as things progress at home. We will be introducing Time Out – which should be real fun. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to share.
Anywho – as the guests arrived, he seemed to pull himself together and act like the sweet boy he is was. And how sweet that Granddad (Cam’s dad) took Gates swimming on Father’s Day, after everyone had lunch and took naps. This was the second day in a row that Granddad came to pick up Gates and take him to the club. They swim, play with the other kids, go down the water slide, eat popsicles and have so much fun!!! It really does melt my heart to see the two of them bonding the way they do. When Joe dropped Gates off yesterday evening, Gates wanted nothing to do with me, Cam, or our house. He took off running down the street - I’m not kidding. you would think I beat him.
Man, this blog is all over the place but there are a couple more things I want to include:
I wish I took a picture of this but, to be honest, I am not sure I like the way I am looking in pictures these days. I mean, I know the camera adds 10 pounds but still. ;) Saturday night Cam and I headed to the Woodlands for our 4th Widespread Panic concert together (probably Cam’s 50th – no exaggeration). I wasn’t dreading the evening but I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to it – but we ended up having a really great time. It was fun to have a night out with my husband and I really do enjoy WSP, especially live. And I think baby boy Franz had a good time, too because he was really active all night.
And finally – along with the terrible twos, Gates has finally started TALKING. Can you believe it?! we can’t. he has been saying momma, dada, ball, NO, etc for a while now and he has a full understanding of what everything is but just WOULDN’T talk. But yesterday morning, before I saw the terrible twos rear its ugly head, he said juice! He was sitting in my lap, after he first woke up, and was pointing to the kitchen and I had no idea what he was pointing at (he has always been a big pointer and I am sure that is part of the reason he hasn’t felt the need to talk yet - he points to something and we get it for him). I kept trying to guess but he kept shaking his head. Well, I guess when he realized that pointing wasn’t going to cut it, he decided to TELL ME (novel idea) what he wanted. JUICE! My heart was swollen with pride. It sounded so funny to hear him articulate what he wanted. I LOVED it! but we will talk more about that when the terrible twos mix with his new found voice.
Have a great week everyone!

June 13 - A Very Special Day!

Where does the time go? No, really – where does it go? First of all, can you believe we are mid-way through June? I feel like we JUST put away our Christmas decorations. And this time last year I was already starting to think about Gates’ Halloween costume (ok, that might have been a little premature, but the costume was CUTE so you can’t argue a well thought out plan).
Anyway – What I really can’t believe it that TWO YEARS AGO today I was given the MOST incredible blessing I will ever know, Gates Patrick.
Growing up, birthdays were a big deal in my family and so I will carry that tradition on to ensure my children always feel special on their birthdays. Without fail (sister, correct me if I am wrong), my mother was always the first phone call I received on my birthday. And EVERY year she would replay the day I was born – and as crazy as it sounds, I don’t think it ever got old (Tracy, thank you for continuing this since my mother’s passing). She would say “this time, 30 years ago, we were at the hospital, blah blah blah”. This is something I will do with my boys, for as long as they let me. However, with boys, I think they will think it is annoying and dorky pretty quickly. I also like to relive it with my husband, who contributes some to the conversation but generally just laughs and nods his head here and there when I say “remember?”. It’s fun.
So I will do it with you guys here, too.
This time two years ago – It was a Saturday morning and we were at the hospital, knowing Gates would come that day. The Friday before (June 12, 2009) I had a check up at the doc (at 36.5 weeks), Cam was with me, and the doc said “well, the baby is coming. You will check in to the hospital tonight and we will induce tomorrow.” Cam and I both were nervous, to say the least. We weren’t ready. We didn’t even have a mattress for his crib yet. The room was not organized, my bag was not packed, and we still didn’t know what to do with a baby. Seriously. But, I was having some minor complications and the doc said IT WAS TIME. He instructed that we have a nice dinner (our last without a baby around) and then head to the hospital. So we did just that. We went to Macaroni Grill, by the house, and they gave us our meal free because we chose their restaurant as our ‘last supper’, if you will.
Labor was easy (I know, I shouldn’t brag because I am about to have another baby and it won’t be the same) and I really don’t remember ever being in pain. There were a few moments I needed some serenity and thanks to my husband, family, and friends – I was able to be calmed and reassured all would be fine. After Gates entered the world (at 5lbs, 10 oz and 21 inches long), Cam and I both were at a loss. Really. We had not a clue what to do. Thank goodness for my sweet friend who is an excellent mommy to two beautiful kiddos, because she rarely left my side (except to do a monumental task I will touch on next) and she handled feedings and diaper changes (with the help of Cam’s aunts). We really enjoy looking back on that now – we were chuckling last night about how clueless we really were. Frightening, I tell you.
And all while we were trying to figure this out at the hospital, my sweet sister-in-law, my mother-in-law, and my friend (mentioned above) were at our house getting it put together for our homecoming. And, I tell you, this was no easy task. I will NEVER forget how touched I was when we got home (and I love that I am documenting it here, too). I felt like Oprah had done a makeover at our place. We were in a tiny townhouse, that was Cam’s cute bachelor pad for years before it became the home for our family, and needed to make use of every inch. Before the baby came, I couldn’t figure out how to do it – it was such an overwhelming task. But they tackled it. Gates’ room was ADORABLE. Everything was hung on the walls, his bed totally put together (they went out and got the mattress, etc.), all his clothes organized, diapers put away. and everything was done in the most logical way. His bath stuff was all organized – the living room was beautiful. They didn’t just focus on the baby – they went into storage and got out my personal belongings from my house (which we had just recently sold) and found places for it in our house to make it more homey for me, too. It was all just amazing. It took my breath away when we came home. I felt so loved and so special at that moment – it really was incredible.
Ah! What great memories. And here we are, two years later with this thriving 2-year old that made us a family. At dinner a couple of weeks ago, Cam looked at Gates and told him “you make me so happy” – and tears filled my eyes. Gates, you made me a mom. You are the absolute best part of my every day. You make me stronger than I ever thought I could be. You have taught me patience (!!!) and unconditional love. You have reminded me of my parents and the sacrifices they made. I love to try to see the world through your big, brown eyes. You are the best thing to ever happen to your daddy and me and we love you so very much! Happy 2nd birthday, Gates Patrick.
**and thank you to all my sweet friends who have already contacted me to wish Gates a happy birthday. Thank you for remembering what a special day this is for us.

Bad Mood Katy
Following up to my last post, this post is so fitting – I am in a bad mood. And what better place to complain about it than here? Not any one particular event caused the birth of this bad mood – but perhaps a variety of things, that when put all together, created Bad Mood Katy (BMK). I used to really know this version of myself because she was around a lot more often but I haven’t seen her in a while. “nice to see you again, BMK.”
What is it with the people I work with? I mean NO ONE SMILES around here (says BMK, who is also not smiling right now). Are people that unhappy? Busy? Arrogant? I really can’t put my finger on it, but it drives me crazy. And if I can get someone to hold the door for me (big ole pregnant me, hands full with food most of the time) it’s a freaking miracle. I feel like I really need to thank that person with a hug or something. It just never happens. And being on the elevator with these grumpy (unhappy, busy, arrogant) people is enough to just set me off. I mean, for the love of life, find something to SMILE about.
But BMK didn’t appear as I walked in the door (that I opened for myself) at work this morning, she was already with me from the moment I woke up (on the wrong side of the bed). Actually, she was with me when I went to sleep last night. She showed up yesterday afternoon as Gates and I were at the neighbors house for a play date. Gates clearly was in a bad mood as well (I blame this to a lack of nap at school) and so he was really struggling with sharing Wade’s toys with him. it is hotter than Houston in June (no, really – it is much hotter this June than past Junes so this is a perfect analogy) right now so my patience was very little. When I tried to explain the concept of sharing with Gates he just lost it. And I don’t mean the normal fit that involves crying and such. This was a “im going to show you how upset I am by throwing myself on the ground and hitting my head on the concrete”. How do you ignore a tantrum like that? You don’t. So I picked him up and carried him out the front door to head on home. Clearly that play date didn’t end like we would have liked it to. It was then, on the walk home, I felt BMK join us. The rest of the night wasn't terrible. Gates pulled himself together (which is easy when he isn’t having to share his toys with anyone) and I managed to get the house picked up and feed him a decent dinner without any meltdowns (by me or him). But by the time my sweet husband got home, I was out of commission. At that point I had this pounding headache that wouldn’t let up. I was sprawled out on the couch, on the heating pad, just waiting until an acceptable time to go to bed. I do bath time every night with Gates – it is our special time to play and sing – but last night, I needed Cam as back-up. I couldn’t do it alone. My singing voice (BMK’s singing voice) wasn’t very chipper. Once we said good night to our little nugget – I knew I was only minutes away from hitting the sack as well.
I said good night to Cam and at 7:45 pm, I retreated to the bedroom. Who does that?? I mean, seriously – aren’t most people just getting home from work at that time? Or starting to cook dinner? I was fast asleep by 8:30 and slept straight through the night (only with the normal 3 bathroom trips in the middle of the night). I woke this morning and the STUPID headache was still with me. What gives? How can a headache stick around for THAT long? I mean, go away already.
But once I sat down at my desk this morning, I felt BMK packing her bags and preparing for her departure. Nothing special happened for her to realize she had outworn her welcome. The headache is still lingering but BMK is not. I think this blog helps me with venting, so if anyone is still reading thank you. and also, when I log into the blog, I see the sweet pics of my family and am reminded of all my blessings (yes, there is that word again).
And I must say – although the bad mood stuck around for a full 12 hours, the strength of it was nothing like bad moods past. I really believe that cameron has made me a more sane person. I used to be totally nuts but now I am just kinda nuts – enough to keep things exciting.

Birthday Bash
Although it isn’t official until June 13 – we celebrated Gates’s 2nd birthday on Saturday with a small (yeah, right) party at the house, complete with bounce house, snow cone machine, hot dogs, cupcakes, presents, balloons, toys, family, friends, and so much fun.
Gates was an angel ALL. DAY. LONG. From when he woke up until bedtime, he never once threw a ‘terrible two’ fit. We have been talking about his birthday party for a couple of weeks leading up the event, trying to get him excited. And as the guests started arriving, I could tell he was in for a good time. His grandpa, sissy, aunt Lisa & Uncle Colby bought him his first tricycle (with all kinds of bells & whistles) and once it was assembled, you couldn’t pull him off of it. But the sweet boy did get off long enough to share it with some friends. I was proud.
Typically Gates is real cautious when it comes to those bounce house contraptions. We have been to many a party where I have to get in the bounce house with him and almost literally make him JUMP (this is a sight too. there was one party that had a bounce house obstacle course and I really got stuck in it. I thought I was going to have to send for help). But this go around – he was ALL about it. I have never seen him work up such a sweat and have so much fun with other kids. He was giggling nonstop.
What made the day most special for both me & Cameron was the amount of love surrounding our little boy that day. My sister drove in from Austin, we had aunts & uncles and friends that all came to celebrate Gates. And we are well aware that kids birthday parties are not top on the list of things people LOVE to do on their Saturday, but we still had a house full of people that wanted to celebrate Gates with us.
As I was driving to work today, I started chuckling thinking to myself that I MUST drive some people crazy with my constant positive attitude and extreme happiness and love for my family. Right? I mean, can someone please tell me to tone it down every once in a while? I even drive myself crazy when I spend time trying to find synonyms for the word blessed. But I always come back to blessed. Because to me, it is that simple.
But for those of you who just want to know that I have a bad day from time to time – it is true, I do. But even on those days, I try to remember that in the grand scheme of things – nothing is that bad to cause me to forget all the blessings in my life.

The Not-So-Terrible Twos
Happy Wednesday, Friend(s). It has been difficult getting back in the swing of things after such a wonderful holiday weekend.
I have so many directions I want this blog to go, so please bear with me.
I am going to start with Wednesday night, just because it was so much fun. I had one of my dearest friends over for dinner. Don’t let me fool you, i didn't cook (not that anyone that knows me was thinking i did); but she picked up a delicious dinner and that was perfect for us . We planned for her to get there in time to see Gates before we put him down for the night. This isn’t easy since he goes to bed earlier than most kids ever, but she made it in time and i really believe it meant as much to her as it did to me, to be able to say goodnight to him. She loves him. And as much as she loves him (and of course as much as I love him) it is so much easier to talk once he asleep - and we had lots to talk about. There was nothing that anyone else would see as extra special about the night but we just don't get to see each other near often enough so it always makes for a special visit. This sweet friend reminds me of what is most important in life; friendships, love, happiness. I cherish my time with her and always feel better about things after a good visit with her.
Thursday was nothing exciting except that every Tuesday & Thursday are special to me since I get to pick up Gates from school. That is my FAVORITE part of the day. Seeing his adorable expression when I walk into his classroom never gets old; and I can’t imagine that it ever will. It always amazes me how independent he is and how grown up he seems when he is surrounded by other kiddos in a classroom environment. Melts my heart. Every. Single. time.
We decided to head to the ranch for Memorial Day weekend even though we knew it would be hot and the chances of us spending all day inside were possible. Cam's parents were going and we had not seen much of them lately so we were excited at the thought of getting away and spending time with them. While we waited for daddy to finish up at the office on Friday, Gates and I got up and at 'em, preparing for the weekend. We made our bi-weekly Target run and then ran by the store for the few items Cam requested for the weekend. Then we made it home in time to pack, eat a little lunch, and take a nap. When Cam got home, we loaded up the car and hit the road. Now - for all moms out there, you know it isn't as easy as that (loading up the car and hitting the road) - i wish i could really put emphasis on the word LOADED. But, we have noticed that we don't need to pack near as much now that Gates is a little bit older. So although the car is still packed tight, we know we are carrying a lighter load than trips past.
We had not been to the ranch as a family since Thanksgiving (yikes - that's too long) and although i have wonderful memories from that trip with our family (Cam's parents and sister and hubby), it was still an exhausting trip because Gates was at such an in-between phase. He was walking but he wasn't as stable as he is now. He couldn't handle stairs very well, he didn't quite understand ‘no’ (or didn't listen), he didn't see the fun in some of the things we tried to introduce him to, etc. Oh, and the car ride for that trip - wow. let me just say that it was a good thing i wasn't pregnant then because as soon as we made it to the ranch i was in need of a stiff drink.
This trip was different from the start. Bittersweet really, because although I am SO grateful for the stage Gates is in now, it also reminds me how quickly kids grow up. Gates was 'talking' for most of the drive there. Some of it we could understand, most of it we could not. But he was so aware of everything that we passed on the road. It was sweet.
And as soon as we arrived - he was off. he wanted to check out everything. he was pointing at trees and tractors, cows, donkeys, ants (yes, my son is obsessed with ants), etc. He loved it. And as soon as Granddaddy got there, he went on a ride on the ranger. he never stopped smiling. He even got to drive and honk the horn. and on one of his many rides, he found a turtle shell (so cool for a little boy). He made rice crispy treats with Sissy (Cam's mom) and helped her shuck corn. He watched Bambi and read books and stayed up WAY past his bedtime. He got to play with water guns and real arrows (without the tip on them to avoid poking an eye out) while he watched granddaddy shoot his bow & arrow. it was as if this trip made me realize what a big boy i have. And how independent he is becoming.
This trip also allowed me to make a mental note while preparing for our newest member in November – two is the magic number. You hear all these horror stories about the terrible twos, but what you don’t hear enough about is the magic behind it all. When they start recognizing things, learning how to do things, and really engaging in things that you always thought were way out of their league. Don’t get me wrong, Gates still needs us in a lot of different ways (and thank God for that) but the difference between him now and six months ago left me in a whirlwind of memories on our drive home. (and let me not downplay the terrible twos, either. Sometimes I can’t even believe he came from my womb.)
After such special weekends, i get real cheesy, deep and emotional. But it doesn’t seem to bother anyone and I certainly don’t mind it. It keeps me thanking my lucky stars and saying to myself “My cup runneth over!”
Next up – Gates’s big birthday bash! Stay tuned!

Being a mommy
The joys of pregnancy - the second time around.
This pregnancy has been so different than my pregnancy with Gates. I hope it isn't a sign of things to come. When i look back on my first pregnancy, i don't remember much except time flying by. Granted, we were busy trying to get our lives settled (sell my house, plan a wedding, etc) but the time really did just zoom on by.
Fast forward to now - i feel like i have been pregnant for 19 years. i can't believe i am not even half way there, yet. And i promised myself (and others around me) that i would soak up every bit of this pregnancy; the good, the bad, the ugly. and i can tell you, it has been ugly. I cry at everything. i mean, really. We were sitting at a family dinner in a public place a couple of weeks ago and i turned to my husband and told him i was about to lose it (start crying) right then & there. for no reason. nonsense, i tell you.
And i have been sleeping like a bear in hibernation. I go to bed before most people are getting home from work.
food - i can't get enough. and it wouldn't be a bad thing if i was craving and eating good-for-you stuff. but instead it is everything the doctor tells you stay away from. fried gooey goodness stuff, donuts, ice cream, candy, fast food, etc. If it is remotely healthy, keep it as far away from me as possible. Within 4.5 hours of finding out i was pregnant, i had gained 5 pounds. this has to be all mental, right? I mean, how is that a positive pregnancy test all of a sudden makes you SO tired, sick, hungry, and fat. My poor husband.
What i do love about this pregnancy is knowing whats in store with the sweet baby in my belly. Gates made me a mommy. He taught me how to love like this and i know that this baby will be no different. i already feel so much emotion for this little avocado (week 16 - that's the size).
As i was going to sleep last night i was thinking of my mother - which is almost a nightly thing. I tend to think of funny sayings we shared or things she taught me. And sometimes, i get lost in the list of things i want to tell her. And at the very top of that list is - "i totally get it now, mom. " She would tell me often that i will never understand until i am a mom. but i would argue her on that, in a playful manner. It went something like this:
Mom: "I love you, Katy. To the moon and back"
Katy: "I love you more!"
Mom: " That's impossible."
Katy: "But mom, i have loved you all of my life and you have only loved me half of yours."
Mom: "Just wait until you are a mommy, you will then understand."
And with that, i would let her 'win' that fight but only to be nice. I really believed i loved her more. but now that i am a mommy, i see who the real winner is. Mom is always right.
Why I Should be Bethenny's BFF
It is unfortunate that i have become so obsessed with reality tv. i am aware of how mindless it all is - what a total waste of time it is. but i can not help being sucked in. It is my guiltiest of pleasures, especially when Cameron is out of town and Gates is asleep. i sit back, with remote in hand, and go through my DVR with excitement about how many hours of entertainment i have ahead of me.
In all of this reality tv watching, i have fallen in love with someone who i believe REALLY is just as she appears in her 'reality' show. and i also believe we have so much in common that she should be my BFF (no offense to all my BFFs, you would still remain BFFs but how fun would it be to include Bethenny in all of the BFF fun? Especially now that she is a millionaire). yes, i am talking about Bethenny Frankel from Bravo's hit show, Bethenny Ever After.
And we do have so much in common -
-we both got pregnant out of wedlock (this sentence was difficult to type but who are we kidding, it is a fact that can't be hidden).
- we both got married at 6 months pregnant (its a tie on who looked better on their wedding day ;))
- we both lost a parent shortly before (or during) our pregnancy
- we both come from crazy childhoods that we continue to try to sort out
- we both love to drink (i feel like this is a huge bonding opportunity)
and the list could go on & on (not really, i have run out of things but thats ok).
She is a total mess. And she cries in every episode - which makes me crazy. and her silly sessions with her therapist, are you kidding? That guy gets paid the big bucks for that? But i still love her. All 82 pounds of her.

Inspired...
So, i set up this account in January of 2009 - shortly after finding out i was pregnant with my sweet little nugget who is now turning two next month! I hate that i never wrote a single entry because by now i would have a full journal of my first pregnancy and the first two years of Gates's life. But oh well - never too late to start. So here I am - inspired by a friend
(http://texaswolfgang.blogspot.com/) who has started her blog to document her experiences while raising twin boys.
A little about me - even though i am certain that if anyone is reading this at all, it is the friend i mentioned above who already knows everything about me.
I am an overly compassionate, sensitive, and neurotic woman. Mother to my precious Gates - who has taught me everything in the world there is to know about loving so completely and deeply. I am also the wife to a wonderful man who taught me, from the very beginning, to live life to the fullest without fear or regret. I am blessed to be expecting again - another boy with whom is yet to be named. This little nugget, in my belly, will complete our little family of 4. Least i forget to mention, Baxter & Peanut, our two annoying as hell chihuahuas who once were the center of our attention and now just fit into the background somehow. I promise you, we do still love them.
