Hello everyone! i know it has been a while since i have updated the blog but things have been a little....busy, or should i say different, lately.
I am certain most my faithful followers are aware of the unfortunate career change forced upon me at the end of August - but i will update you all anyway.
On the three year anniversary of my mom's death (yes,i have to reference that to add DRAMA to my story) - my employer of three years laid me off. At 7.5 months pregnant! can you believe it? So where does that leave me? I am now a kept woman! a lady that lunches, if you will. TOTALLY kidding - of course. I am a now eight month pregnant woman who has to log on to unemployment every week and apply for three jobs. Are you kidding me? how did i end up here? i am not real sure. Shaw (said employer) is definitely going through some rough times and i knew it was a possibility that i not make it through the rough times. I wasn't torn apart about being let go - i actually looked at it as a blessing, with the help of my husband and friends perspectives. Since my last day, i have been busy!
It just so happened that Gates' school was closed for Labor day vacation for most of my first week unemployed. I got to spend some extra time with him while also getting some things done around the house (mostly making lists of things i want to get done around the house). Then, as my luck would have it, my poor little pumpkin got SICK on my second week unemployed. So i was home taking care of a vomiting little boy. it wasn't fun but i felt blessed that Cam didn't have to miss work and that i was able to be home with him, without worry about missing things at work. So this is my third week of unemployment and i have gotten SO much done! Should i bore you with the details? Enjoy my bulleted list below...
- I took my boots in to be cleaned for the fall
- returned some of Gates' BIRTHDAY gifts that were duplicates. yes, his birthday was in June. See what i mean? i have been putting off so much stuff and now is the time to do it.
- cleaned out closets
- pulled stuff together for a garage sale (it will be one hell of a garage sale)
- helped to get my husband more organized (this is a task)
- rested
- caught up on my trashy reality tv
- spent some time with sweet baby Kate Crossley who is over three weeks old now.
- made a trip to Austin to see my aunt, uncle, and cousins
- had the exterminator out to the house and Stanley Steamer (after the vomiting little boy, this was necessary).
- lots of trips to the store
- help in dinner preparations (as much as a kitchen challenged person can help)
and the list could go on and on.
I feel so productive. I really do. I have moved stuff around in my house - finding the perfect place for things that have never really had a place at all. i am staying busy, there is no doubt.
As far as my pregnancy goes - i am feeling HUGE. i can't believe i don't remember this part of my pregnancy with Gates. i hate night time and trying to fall asleep because I am SO uncomfortable. i have the worst indigestion - i can't seem to eat enough tums. i also cant' seem to eat enough chocolate.
and the most scary part of the pregnancy is that for a brief period in time, i was UNINSURED due to the lay-off. That was SCARY. i just knew i was going to have this baby early and we were going to rack up some serious medical debt (that's a way to think positive, right?) but instead, all is well and i am insured again! My husband's company kicked some serious butt in getting me insured quickly and stress level has gone down expotenitally.
Gates is great now. all better and loving going to school every day (vs just the part time program he was on). i really think he enjoys the routine and activity and fun that comes with attending school 5 days a week. I do notice he is EXHAUSTED at the end of the day but that just means he has had a full day of learning and socializing.
I could type forever because (i have nothing else to do) i have so much to say but i guess i will save it for another post.
have a great Wednesday (is today Wednesday? i lose track now. :))

Three years ago....
While most people keep a blog to allow family and friends to follow their lives and stay in touch – I realized that I keep one as more of a journal for myself. I love that I have loyal readers (all three of you) but I also really love going back and reading my entries and knowing I will be able to do that for years to come.
Disclaimer - this particular entry will be a little more heavy than past entries.
My life was turned upside down three years ago tomorrow (Aug 26). I don’t think I will ever forget the series of events and the way things unfolded – and I am not sure that I want to. I went to work, just as I would any normal Tuesday. I remember taking one of those silly quiz “get to know me better” email forward things and one of the questions was “what do you fear most in life” and my response was “death. Losing a loved one” – I had NO idea I was about to look that fear straight in the eye. That evening, I had dinner with a friend and went home. I remember pulling out of the parking lot of the restaurant and for a second I thought about calling my mom but then decided not to; I was too tired. I fell asleep that night with my phone by my bed – nothing unusual there. Living alone, I always wanted my phone nearby in case of an emergency. Besides, it was also my alarm clock. I remember my phone ringing and waking me a couple of different times but I just silenced the ringer and went back to sleep. Around 330, my phone rang again and I woke and looked to see my sister calling me. I thought this was odd because it was in the middle of the night. I answered the phone and
she said “Katy?”
I replied “Yes, what’s wrong?”
Trish “Moms not with us anymore.”
Katy “What? What do you mean?”
Trish “moms not with us anymore.”
I will NEVER, for as long as I live, forget those words and how they made me feel. It was lonely. And so FINAL. I don’t know how else to explain it but if you have experienced a close personal loss then you know what I am talking about . the finality of losing someone so unexpectedly is almost too much to bear.
And I remember thinking about my poor sister – who, by the time she finally reached me at 3:30 in the morning, had heard the news from my father and gotten in her car and driven to Houston. She was exiting the freeway to come to my house when I answered the phone. She had to drive the entire drive from Austin to Houston knowing that she had to tell her baby sister that our mom had died. What a terrible feeling.
I hung up from talking to her and paced the house – feeling the closest to an out of body experience as I have ever felt. And then I went outside and waited to see my sister’s headlights coming down my dark and lonely street – in the middle of the night. from my driveway I called my dear friend, Tracy and woke her up. she wanted to come over but I assured her I was fine. I remember wanting to call some other friends, too but I didn’t want to wake anyone….as if this wasn’t urgent or something. and I remember calling sweet Cameron – who at the time was merely my boyfriend of THREE weeks. I left him a message telling him my mom had died. What a heavy message that was to receive. And then I saw my sister’s headlights and I stood up, waiting to hug her. Everything after this is kinda a blur. I remember emailing my boss to tell her that I would not be into work (and I didn’t return for 8 days following). I remember my sister and I driving from my house to my parents house to see my dad and find out what happened. My dad was sitting in the dark….staring at the wall. And the spot at the kitchen table where my mom had died was still ‘there’. To go into more detail at this point would be too painful for my little heart to bear. But these are my memories.
The minutes, hours, days, and weeks to follow were filled with so much emotion. I was completely beside myself at what my friends did for me in the wake of my mother’s passing. To this day, it makes me cry. Within hours of the news being passed around to different people, I had a house full of love and support. my girlfriends went to the grocery store to get food in my house, they got my wireless internet up and running, they dug through my belongings and pulled out pictures of my mom and framed them throughout my house. They took care of my dogs, they went shopping for a dress for me to wear to the funeral. They organized dinner schedules, they purchased flowers, they took phone calls, and passed on the devastating news to the people I couldn’t talk to. They took control when I felt I had lost it all. And it was then that I realized what true friendships were about. Within hours of news spreading, both my sister and I had friends arriving in town from all over the US. So in a time of such tragedy – to feel so blessed was overwhelming and comforting.
I could type forever about the way the rest of the days unfolded and the things I remember – but this would turn into a book instead of a blog.
To say that my mother & I were very close would be an understatement. We had a unique relationship –I didn’t depend on her in the ways some of friends do with their moms but I depended on her to BE THERE. To always answer the phone; to listen to me vent; to support me; to cheer me on; to bridge the relationship between me & my father; to always understand me. She was not only my mother, she was the keeper of all of my memories, she was Santa Claus, and the birthday fairy, she made every holiday and achievement special. She was thoughtful and had a heart the size of Texas. She was funny – and mysterious. And bless her heart, I think she battled a lot of things internally without ever seeking help. She was strong in so many ways and weak in others. The bottom line – she was my mom. that can’t ever be replaced. I will never be able to get a new mom. She was it. I don’t care what anyone says – NO ONE loves you like your mom! no one. And being a mom now, that is even more evident.
She passed in August and I found out I was pregnant in November. I got married the following March. My life has been one GIANT blessing after another since I lost my mom. Do you know how difficult that is for me to type? But I recognize that I would have never let myself love or be loved in the ways I have with cameron if my she were still alive. She was an albatross in a lot of ways. And that is difficult to type, as well. but I worried about her nonstop. I wanted to give her the world, fix all of her problems – even the ones she wouldn’t admit to. I wanted to make it all better – to the point of being unhealthy. I will never forget meeting a dear friend for drinks about a week after my mom died. This friend was out of town for the funeral and so she had not seen me and the first thing she said to me is, “you seem lighter”. I will never forget that. because I did feel lighter. Strange the way things work.
My mom wouldn’t know my life now. I am so different. I am more simple. I am happy. I am not conflicted. I am a motherless daughter, too – that part makes me sad.

We Have a Name!
Hooray! Cameron & I have finally decided on a name for our little nugget. I have had many friends ask me to please hurry up with a name already so they can head on to the monogram shops and get some things personalized for sweet baby Franz. And while Cam appreciates the sweet gesture behind personalized gifts, this was not reason enough for him to hurry up and make a decision. We have had many discussions about names - none of which ended with a final decision ... and i was losing my mind! i wanted so badly to be able to start calling our sweet baby by name, especially to Gates. but last week i asked Cameron if we could please have a serious talk about names and possibly decide on one - and he said "OK". it was that easy. So when we started really talking about the different names we had been considering, we realized that we both loved the same one the most.
So - drumroll please......
..........................................................................................................................................................................
Gray Malloy Franz
(his full name will be Grayson but we will call him Gray always). So why make his full name Grayson, you ask. We have no answer.
Malloy is Cameron's grandfather's middle name.
Hope you love it as much as we do!

Weekend Recap
We had a very busy & fun-filled weekend!! My sister came in town on Friday evening and spent the weekend with us. I love having her here but hate saying goodbye to her at the end of the weekend even more. Her and Gates share a very special relationship. He loves her. it warms my heart to see how comfortable he is with her and how sweet she is with him. There is no doubt they are buddies.
We celebrated a big occasion on Saturday at our house. We invited all our family over to cheers to my magnificent Mimi who turned 91 years old last week!!! She is the glue that holds our family together – and I love that she is still so with it and still so much a force to be reckoned with in our family.
Here are some pictures from the big birthday bash.
Saturday night we got to celebrate another fun birthday. My dear friend Melissa’s husband, Ryan, is now the big 30! It was fun to have a night out with my hubby, spent with friends. We had a great time and wish for Ryan a very special year filled with lots of love!
And the fun didn’t stop there. I got to attend a fun brunch with family at Ouisie’s Table on Sunday morning to celebrate my sister-in-law’s birthday. It was so nice to get together with some of the ladies in our family for some genuine girl talk and yummy food.
What a great weekend spent with people that I really really love. The next couple of weeks are going to be bittersweet (I will talk more about that later) so it was fun to have a weekend that kept me busy, laughing, and counting my blessings!

A trip down memory lane….
August is a month of memories for me – some good and some bad. Today marks the 3 year anniversary of one of my favorite memories! Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we?
I met Cameron in January of 2008 but it wasn’t until a fishing trip with my father that I really started to notice him as something serious! My dad was always very involved in a fishing tournament in Port O’Connor called POCIFT. I had gone many times in the past – once with just my dad, once with my entire family, and my first time was just me, mom, and dad. It was ALWAYS a good time. 2008 POCIFT - My mom had decided to not attend this particular year but I knew I wanted to still go, i just needed to find someone else to accompany me and be the buffer between me & pops. My dad is my dad – I love him dearly, but to say we are the closest of fathers and daughters would not be accurate. POCIFT was always so much fun, so I knew that anyone I invited would have a good time, assuming they liked to fish and were fairly low maintenance. Cameron immediately came to mind. He was fun (we had only hung out two times prior to this event), liked to fish, and I knew he was about as laid back as they come.
So randomly I emailed him and asked if he had plans that particular weekend. Surprisingly enough, he was available and interested in going! I was so excited to have someone accompany me on this trip but had no idea how life-changing it would be, literally. Cam picked me up that Friday (three years ago TODAY) and we hit the road towards PoC. And from the minute I got in his car, I had butterflies in my stomach. I enjoyed his company so much more than I had anticipated. We talked and laughed and had so much fun the entire weekend. I will never forget calling my mom to just say hello and her hearing it in my voice that something was different. And my sister, too! I called my sister to ask her something and she remembers (and will comment to this day) that something was special about that phone call – she could just tell that her little sister was smitten. By the end of the weekend, I knew I didn’t want to be away from Cameron. I was sad when he dropped me off at home that Sunday and I couldn’t wait to see him again.
I remember describing the weekend to family and friends as effortless, genuine, relaxing, fun. looking back now, I still get butterflies. It amazes me how the universe shifts and stars align and there you are – face to face with the person you know, deep in your soul, you are supposed to be with. There was never a doubt after that. I just knew. And that was the only way I could explain it to anyone.
I am so happy my dad was around that weekend – to see the beginning of us. I am not sure if he saw it as much as we were feeling it, but he definitely got to know Cameron and respect him. Cam never got to meet my mom. She died three weeks later. But it gives me so much joy to know that she knew I had met him and that he made me happy. I think she just knew, too. We call it mom’s intuition.
**a little more history for those interested… Cam and I met on a blind date in January of 2008. My aunt set us up – she is another one that just knew. Two weeks before she died, my mom sent my aunt a note saying THANK YOU for introducing Katy and Cameron. Crazy, right? we were only a few weeks in the relationship and even though I knew in my heart & soul that I wanted to marry him – I wasn’t about to admit that anyone else (or even myself, for that matter). My mom just knew there was something special about him.
I consider myself the luckiest woman in the world. I really do. I still find myself thinking about how things unfolded – the series of events that led me to him. Magic. I can’t get enough of him.

A little bit of bragging!
My mom loved telling my sister & I “GOOD JOB!” and she loved bragging about us. She would talk to anyone that would listen. The delivery man, the checker at the grocery store, etc. She just wanted the world to know how amazing she thought we were. I think I inherited that from her – I enjoy celebrating other people. Maybe it is just one more way I can carry my mom’s legacy with me, by celebrating other people. So this blog is dedicated to my momma but will celebrate my sister!
She comes so easy for me to brag about. She is truly genius. There is so much I could say but I will try to sum it all up into her latest accomplishment. (Who am I kidding, I won’t be able to do that.)
I am a disaster in the kitchen. The spice aisle at the grocery store gives me anxiety. It is a true talent and a science to be able to put a bunch of flavors together and make something that tastes good. But she does it, every single day. With passion. And it amazes me. I stayed with her recently when I was in town for my nana’s funeral and to just see her way of life was so impressive to me. and I know it drives her crazy that I am impressed by the silly things she considers normal, but I can’t help it. anyway – she made me the most delicious breakfast and I don’t even really like breakfast. And the way she did it was so chef-like (this sounds like a joke, but I am being serious when I say it. Melissa, she is like Adam Sandler’s sandwich in Spanglish – are you with me on this?). Like this is in her blood, y’all. I may change careers 30 times in my life but she will ALWAYS be a chef at heart. How are we so different in that aspect? And while I was in Austin, she was in the process of finishing up the final touches on her new menu at work. WHAT?! I mean, that alone is a daunting task. She had to come up with an entire new menu (do you know how many spices that involves?) – and crunch numbers for it to make sure it was in their budget. And then how on earth do you know how much food to buy for that new menu. It is seriously all way too overwhelming to me. But, she is a master of her trade. So after I returned back to Houston, her menu launched. And the Austin Chronicle came out to photograph some of her menu items and sample them. well, this is the result of that visit with the Chronicle. Click here.
I mean, what? The best fried chicken in Austin? That’s huge, right? and it’s not like all the reviews were nice and they were just being polite. The writer straight up called Mrs. P’s Electric Cook’s chicken bloody. This is the same publication (but different writer) that claimed Trish served the best diner food in all the universe. read that review here.
She is a local celebrity. And if I were to win even half a lottery, my first investment would be on her. She makes me proud every single day of my life. I get excited for Gates to be around her because I can already tell he senses her coolness. She will be able to teach him so much. She is way cooler than I could ever be. And I will tell you that she is the NUMBER 1 reason I wanted to have another baby. I wanted Gates to feel that bond that siblings share. I wanted him to know that he would NEVER be alone. There is something to be said about my relationship with my sister. We may be very different in obvious ways but we are SO much alike in most ways. I see so much of my mom and dad in her – she is like the best mixture of both of them. she has my dad’s smarts with my mom’s heart. And everyone loves being around her, everyone. How lucky am I that I get to have a sister that is THIS cool? I just can’t seem to get enough of her, my little pistachio.
